Frequently asked questions

  • Rather than show every credit card we offer, by checking your eligibility first, we’ll only show you the cards you can apply for. You’ll also see what credit limit and interest rate you’re likely to get before you apply. This means you’re less likely to be declined or given a different offer when you make a full application.

Check your eligibility without affecting your credit score.

  • You can apply for a Halifax credit card if:

    • You are a UK resident, aged 18 or over, with a regular annual income.
    • You are free of County Court Judgements (CCJs), Individual Voluntary Agreements (IVAs) or bankruptcies.
    • You are not unemployed or a student.
    • You have not been declined for a Halifax credit card within the last 30 days.

When you check your eligibility, you’ll need a few bits of basic information to hand. This includes things like your addresses for the last 3 years, bank details, annual income, spending commitments, and a few other details.

Learn more about how to apply for a credit card.

  • The interest rate and credit limit you’re offered will depend on a few factors. These can include your spending history, income, spending commitments, how you’ve managed credit in the past, and more. All this will be determined during the eligibility and application process.

You can do an eligibility check to see your estimated credit limit and interest rates before you apply. The eligibility check won’t affect your credit score and will take a few minutes.

  • A credit card can help you take control of your finances, but it needs to be the right option for your needs. Not all borrowing options are appropriate for all situations.  For example, you may decide a credit card is not suitable with which to buy a car and may decide that a loan might be more suitable for you. However, if you need more flexibility over your monthly repayments, a credit card could provide that.

Learn more about the borrowing options available, including credit cards, loans, arranged overdrafts, and more, to help decide which is right for you.

  • This depends on what you want to use it for, and your individual circumstances.

Each type of credit card we offer is suitable for a different purpose. For example, our travel credit cards might be suitable for your spending at home and abroad, but a balance transfer card could help you to bring other credit and store card balances into one place.

Read through everything on this page and take a look at our guide on how to choose a credit card to learn more about which card might be right for you.

  • No. It only does a ‘soft’ credit search that can’t be seen by other lenders, so they can’t use it when making a lending decision. If you go ahead and apply for a credit card then we will perform a full credit check. This could impact your credit score. Credit is available subject to status.

  • Some of the top tips for using a credit card include:

    • Borrow only what you can afford.
    • Don't go over your credit limit.
    • Know the cost of borrowing.
    • Check statements carefully.
    • Keep your card and PIN safe.
    • Make payments on time.
