Track down an unclaimed account

If you've held a Halifax account in the past and think you may still have accounts with us, we can do our best to find and reactivate these for you.

Before you begin, try to get hold of the following information about your Halifax account. This will help speed up your search:

  • Old bank statements
  • Old passbooks
  • Any correspondence from us
  • Any other information about your account

To start the tracing process

You can call us or visit your local branch with a counter where a colleague will be able to talk you through what needs to be done.

If you would rather submit an electronic account tracing form online you can visit www.mylostaccount.org.uk. This is an official site set up by UK Finance, the Building Societies Association (BSA) and National Savings and Investments (NS&I) and can be used to trace accounts which may have been lost from multiple banks and building societies.

Or, you can download and print a form from www.mylostaccount.org.uk and send it to us at:

Halifax
Charlton Place
Andover
Hampshire
SP10 1RE

If you do contact us by phone or visit the branch, please have to hand any old passbooks, statements or other information related to the account you're trying to trace. If you come into a branch you'll also need to bring along some identification, such as a passport or driving licence.

Once we’ve traced your accounts we’ll write to you about the next steps to reunite you with your money. You should hear from us within 90 days. We’ll also contact you if we need any more information.

About the scheme

We participate in the unclaimed assets scheme established under the Dormant Bank and Building Societies Act 2008. The purpose of the scheme is to enable money in dormant accounts (which means balances in accounts that have been inactive or dormant for 15 years or more) to be distributed for the benefit of the community, while protecting the rights of customers to reclaim their money.

Under the scheme, we may transfer balances of dormant accounts to Reclaim Fund Limited (RFL). RFL is a not-for-profit reclaim fund which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

If we transfer the balance of your account to RFL, you'll have against RFL whatever right to payment of your balance as you would have had against us if the transfer had never happened. We'll still be responsible for managing all aspects of the customer relationship with you and for handling all repayment claims (which we'll do on behalf of RFL). You should continue to contact us in the usual way if you have any queries or complaints in relation to your account or balance.

Both we and RFL participate in the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). The transfer by us to RFL of your balance will not adversely affect any entitlement you have to compensation from the FSCS.
