What is a travel credit card?

Travel credit cards work in the same way as any other credit card. The main difference is that they offer travel-related benefits, which might include:

  • No foreign transaction fees on card purchases
  • No cash withdrawal fees.

A travel credit card could be a safer alternative to carrying large amounts of cash when abroad.

Things to look out for

  • Some cash machine companies may charge you for withdrawing cash.
  • Interest charges will apply from the day you make a cash withdrawal.
  • Unless you repay your balance in full each month, or a 0% promotional interest rate applies, you'll be charged interest on any card purchases.

When you spend abroad, Mastercard will set the exchange rate on that day.

Let’s take a closer look

    • Manage your account online.
Check balances, recent transactions and statements. You can also make payments, request transfers and more.
    • Complete fraud protection.
Lost your card? Didn't authorise a transaction? Tell us right away. We won't charge you.
    • Repay your way.
You could do a bank transfer, use your debit card or set up a regular Direct Debit.
    • UK call centres.
We're here to help with essential services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Not all Telephone Banking services are available this often.
    • Contactless.
Use your card or add it to a compatible mobile device for quick and safe contactless payments.
    • Paper-free monthly statements.
View them online rather than by post. We'll email you when a new one is ready.
  • You need to check your eligibility to see your interest rate and estimated credit limit.

This is helpful to you because you'll be able to make a more informed choice. It will show you all of the cards that you can apply for. You'll find out what your interest rates would be.

The eligibility check lets you see all this information without affecting your credit score.

If you decide to apply for any of the cards, we'll then run a credit search.

Answer a few basic details on our eligibility checker. It takes about 5 minutes to complete.

Is a travel card right for you?

A travel card may be helpful if you regularly travel abroad.

If it's a one-off trip, ask yourself if a credit card is right for you. Although carrying a card is more safe than cash, you may lose track of your spending. Using your debit card could be another option. But, before you decide, make sure you're aware of any foreign transaction costs before you travel.
