Home Energy Saving Tool

How green is your home?

The UK government has committed to making the UK carbon neutral by 2050. This means the CO2 we produce each year will be cancelled out by energy saving measures.

With our homes making up 16% of current carbon emissions, we all have a part to play in achieving this goal. That’s why the Halifax has teamed up with the Energy Saving Trust to give you a Home Energy Saving Tool.

It helps you find out just how green your home is and shows how a few changes could make your home more friendly to the environment.

Want to know what steps you can take to make your home more energy efficient?

Why not explore how, by using the Home Energy Saving Tool

How does the tool work?

The tool is really quick and easy to use. Just answer a few questions about your home and it’ll give you a personalised action plan. This will include estimates of your Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating, energy costs and your home’s CO2 emissions. There’s guidance for each question to help you if you need it.

Your action plan will also give you tips on how to reduce your home energy use, how much these changes might cost and how much they could save you in the long term.

What information will I need?

You’ll need to answer some questions about your property so we can give you an estimate on your overall costs. Some things might be easy to answer, like how many rooms your home has. Others may be a little more difficult – like when your property was built. Don’t worry if you don’t know the exact date, just give a rough estimate.

Some of the information you’ll need to provide includes:

  • when your house was built
  • number of bedrooms
  • what your roof is made of
  • what your walls are made of
  • how you usually heat your home (gas boiler, oil system)
  • an estimate of your current annual electricity and gas bill.

Once we’ve got the details, we’ll be able to draft up a cost-effective action plan for lowering the costs of your energy bills and improving your property’s efficiency.

This will include:

  • your current and estimated (after improvement) EPC rating
  • your current and estimated bills
  • your estimated reduction in CO2 output
  • potential yearly savings.
